Generation VI: Kalos, 3D and the Fairy type

Generation VI — X, Y and the remakes Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire — is the smallest in new Pokémon (72), but one of the most impactful in mechanics.

What changed

Fairy type: the 18th type, created to rein in Dragon (which was nearly uncontested). Fairy is strong against Dragon, Dark and Fighting; weak to Poison and Steel.
Mega Evolution: a temporary battle transformation (see the dedicated guide).
3D graphics: full polygonal models, dynamic camera.
Type rebalance: Steel lost its resistances to Ghost and Dark; Poison became super effective against Fairy.

X/Y for the original Kalos experience. ORAS for the best version of Hoenn, with Mega Evolution built in and the Delta Episode.

Starter: Froakie becomes Greninja (Water/Dark), one of the most popular Pokémon in the series; Fennekin becomes Delphox (Fire/Psychic).
Talonflame (via Fletchling): Fire/Flying with priority Brave Bird via Gale Wings.
Aegislash (via Honedge): Steel/Ghost with an attack/defense form change.
Sylveon (Eevee with affection and a Fairy move): special wall and attacker.
Goodra (via Goomy): a pure Dragon pseudo-legendary with monstrous Sp. Def.
One Mega: Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X/Y or Mega Gardevoir.
